Dear friends, 

now it's over, our first official beta test: without exception it was a lot of fun with our testers and the test results - so much in advance - are pleasantly good.  

We extended the testing period spontaneously over the Easter holidays to get those cooking sessions in the test as well - also Joseph had his first baby, which slowed down the process additionally :)

This positive test result could not be foreseen from the outset - internally when we started the test, the "BBQ-PAD" project was in fact on the verge of failure:

NOT SUITABLE FOR THE DISHWASHER? 

 Probably the trickiest part of the test phase: The pad is only conditionally suitable for cleaning in the dishwasher, and will officially receive the rating "NOT SUITABLE FOR THE dishwasher". 

 You may ask: Why are you guys even thinking about putting a cutting pad on the market that must not be put in the dishwasher? 

 Quite simply: Because otherwise the pad is simply too good NOT to be put on the market - and with some background information & a little caution the pad can be put in the dishwasher.

BACKGROUND

The pad consists of the highest quality TPU, a thermoplastic polyurethane, which is normally used in medical technology and must therefore meet the highest demands.

Besides really EXCELLENT cut resistance and best hygienic properties, the material is thermoplastic, meaning it becomes deformable at a certain temperature. 

Dishwashers heat the dishes to around 60-70° Celsius, making the pad yielding and, depending on how it is stored, bulging in the dishwasher. When the pad cools down, it solidifies in its respective shape: If the pad is deformed by the temperature in the machine and then cools down in the machine, it retains this shape beforehand.

Basically, the pad can already be rinsed in the machine if certain caution is exercised: The pad only needs to be removed warm from the machine immediately after rinsing and has to be laid out flat for cooling, then it stays perfectly in shape. 

(Good to know:: If the pad has nevertheless deformed, simply put it back into the dishwasher and, as described above, remove it still warm from the machine immediately after rinsing and lay it out flat - the pad is perfectly straight again, even if it was strongly deformed.)

For us, however, this limitation was the big sticking point in the run-up to the test: How do the test subjects react to it? Does this (perhaps only perceived) additional effort leverage the obvious added value of the pad? 

We were completely convinced of the other characteristics of the pad and relatively sure of our matter, but we had already invested a whole bunch of money in development and mould construction and with this question the whole project was at stake. 

Accordingly, we were nervous about the first test reports, which gradually came in from the testers. 

Fortunately, our concern was unfounded: The test results (see below) speak for themselves, especially when it comes to "Hygiene & Cleaning". 

In particular, the topic of "dishwasher resistance" has not been raised by almost any tester. 

 Overall, the pad not only scored excellently in the categories surveyed, most testers probably used it as a kind of universal worktop for the board, because such a light mat can be cleaned much better than a heavy wooden board. Also, the pad seems as well be ideal for baking or rolling dough, as the dough does not stick to the surface even without flour.

CONCLUSION

The BBQ pad is (surprisingly) far advanced from the development stage and we now have the confidence to have the first small series of 2500 pieces produced. 

(And yes - of course in anthracite-black only. The white prototypes failed miserably in the test. :) 

 Accordingly, we ordered the material today, after all 2.2 tons. While we wait for the material, we rework the injection mould and in aprox. 3 weeks (delivery time of the material) the production starts.

 THIS FEELS GREAT AFTER ALL!

Liebe Freunde,  

nun ist er also vorbei, unser erster offizieller Beta-Test: Es hat ausnahmslos richtig viel Spaß gemacht mit unseren Testern und die Testergebnisse - so viel vorab - sind erfreulich gut.

Wir haben die Testphase spontan über die Osterfeiertage verlängert, außerdem hat Joseph in der Zwischenzeit sein erstes Kind bekommen, was den Prozess zusätzlich etwas ausgebremst hat. 

Dabei war dieses positive Testergebnis nicht von vorne herein abzusehen - intern stand das Projekt "BBQ-PAD" tatsächlich kritisch auf der Kippe:

NICHT FÜR DIE SPÜLMASCHINE GEEIGNET?  

Wohl kniffligster Teil der Testphase: Das Pad ist nur bedingt geeignet zur Reinigung in der Spülmaschine, und wird offiziell wohl das Prädikat „NICHT GEEIGNET FÜR DIE SPÜLMASCHINE“ bekommen.  

Warum man überhaupt darüber nachdenkt, eine Schneideunterlage auf den Markt zu bringen, die nicht in die Spülmaschine darf?  

Ganz einfach: Weil das Pad ansonsten einfach zu gut ist, um es NICHT auf den Markt zu bringen – und mit ein paar Hintergrundinformationen & etwas Vorsicht kann das Pad nämlich durchaus in die Spülmaschine.

DER HINTERGRUND

Das Pad besteht aus hochwertigstem TPU, einem thermoplastischen Polyurethan, welches normal Anwendung in der Medizin-Technik findet und somit höchsten Ansprüchen genügen muss.  

Neben wirklich AUSSERGEWÖHNLICHER Schnittfestigkeit und besten hygienischen Eigenschaften ist das Material thermoplastisch, d.h. es wird ab einer gewissen Temperatur verformbar.

Spülmaschinen erhitzen das Spülgut auf rund 60-70° Celsius, wodurch das Pad nachgiebig wird und sich je nach Lagerung in der Spülmaschine wölbt.  

Beim Auskühlen erstarrt das Pad dann in der jeweiligen Form: Wenn sich das Pad also in der Maschine durch die Temperatur verformt und dann in der Maschine auskühlt, behält es diese Form VORERST bei.  

Grundsätzlich kann das Pad also schon in der Maschine gespült werden, wenn man gewisse Vorsicht walten lässt: Das Pad muss nur unmittelbar nach dem Spülgang noch warm aus der Maschine entnommen und FLACH zum Auskühlen ausgelegt werden, dann bleibt es perfekt in Form.  

(ÜBRIGENS: Wenn sich das Pad trotzdem einmal verformt hat, einfach das Pad erneut in die Spülmaschine geben und wie oben beschrieben unmittelbar nach dem Spülgang noch warm aus der Maschine entnehmen und flach auslegen – so zieht sich das Pad wieder perfekt gerade, auch wenn es stark deformiert war. )

Für uns war diese Einschränkung aber im Vorfeld des Tests der große Knackpunkt: Wie reagieren die Testpersonen darauf? Hebelt dieser (vielleicht nur empfundene) Zusatzaufwand den für uns offenkundigen Mehrwert des Pads aus?  

Von den anderen Eigenschaften des Pads waren wir restlos überzeugt und unserer Sache relativ sicher, aber wir hatten nun mal schon einen ganzen Haufen Geld in die Entwicklung und den Formenbau investiert und mit dieser Frage stand das gesamte Projekt auf dem Spiel.  

Entsprechend nervös haben wir auf die ersten Testberichte geschielt, die nach und nach von den Testern bei uns eingetroffen sind.

Zum Glück war unsere Sorge unbegründet: Die Testergebnisse (s.u.) sprechen eine eindeutige Sprache, gerade beim Thema „Hygiene & Reinigung“. 

Besonders das Thema „Spülmaschinenfestigkeit“ wurde von fast keinem Tester nachhaltig problematisiert.  

Insgesamt hat das Pad nicht nur in den abgefragten Kategorien hervorragend abgeschnitten - die meisten Tester haben es als eine Art Universal-Auflage für das Brett genutzt, weil sich so eine leichte Matte viel besser reinigen lässt als ein schweres Holzbrett. (Zum Beispiel, dass das Pad hervorragend auch zum Backen bzw. Teigrollen geeignet ist, da der Teig auch ohne Mehl nicht an der Oberfläche anhaftet.)

FAZIT: Das BBQ-Pad ist vom Entwicklungsstand (erstaunlich) weit fortgeschritten - und wir haben nun das Selbstvertrauen, die erste Kleinserie von 2500 Stück produzieren zu lassen.  

(Und ja – natürlich in Anthrazit-Schwarz. Die weißen Prototypen sind kläglich im Test gescheitert. :)  

Dementsprechend haben wir heute das Material bestellt - immerhin 2,5 Tonnen. Während wir auf das Material warten, überarbeiten wir noch einmal die Spritzgussform und in wenn das Material (voraussichtlich ca. 3 Wochen Lieferzeit) angekommen ist, geht die Produktion los.

Liebe Freunde, 

etwas früher als gedacht:

Die BBQ-Pad-Prototypen für den offiziellen Beta-Test sind gekommen!  

Ohne dem offiziellen Test vorweg greifen zu wollen: Das neue Material entspricht genau unseren Vorstellungen und zum jetzigen Entwicklungsstand haben wir über diesem Projekt nur noch Fragezeichen, die sich ausschließlich über den bereits angekündigten Beta-Test klären lassen.

Trotzdem wollen wir vor Start der Serienproduktion möglichst sicher sein, dass sowohl das Produkt als auch die begleitende Kommunikation unseren und vor allem EUREN Ansprüchen genügen und wir ein Produkt herstellen, auf das wir alle miteinander stolz sein können!

Für uns fühlt es sich also im Moment sehr gut und folgerichtig an, endlich das Projekt zu öffnen und die Beta-Phase einzuläuten.

TESTER GESUCHT!

Wir suchen Tester, die bereit sind, das Pad GRÜNDLICH unter die Lupe zu nehmen und unter verschiedenen Bedingungen und Nutzungs-Szenarien auf Herz & Nieren zu testen. 

Dazu gehört die einfache Foto-Dokumentation der verschiedenen Einsätze und eine ausführlichere Dokumentation eventuell auftretender Mängel - zusammen mit unserem kurzen Fragebogen zu euren Erfahrungen zum Abschluss des Tests. 

Das Brett soll hierzu in möglichst abwechslungsreichen Umständen getestet werden: Grillfest im Schnee, Schnitzelklopfen, Flambieren, Kräuterschneiden, Brot schneiden, mit kochendem Wasser übergiessen usw...wir wollen wissen, in welchen (halbwegs haushaltsüblichen) Situationen das Pad an seine Grenzen kommt und sich anders verhält als Ihr es erwartet hättet. 

 Ausführlichere Anleitungen zum Testen kommen dann mit dem Prototypen per Post.

We are looking for testers who are willing to thoroughly examine the pad and put it through its paces under various conditions and usage scenarios. 

This includes a simple photo documentation of the various uses and a more detailed documentation of any defects that may occur - together with our short questionnaire on your experience at the end of the test. 

(Test the board in varying circumstances: We want to know in which (halfway normal household situations) situations the pad reaches its limits and behaves differently than you would have expected it to behave in. More detailed instructions will be sent with the prototype by post.)

BBQ-PAD: Next steps!

It's been a while, so first things first:

BBQ-PAD

After a short break we already went back to the project "BBQ-Pad" with renewed enthusiasm, here is a summary of the development until today:

- The BBQ pad was 98% finished with the last prototypes and we already were quite proud of it.

- Only the cut resistance of the material we had imagined a little better, respectively the cutting marks on the dark-coloured material are slightly too visible.

- However, the following balancing act must be taken into account here: The softer the material, the more sensitive to cutting marks, but the better the slip resistance. Conversely, this means: The harder the pad, the more robust it is - but the slip resistance decreases.

- It is therefore necessary to find a material that finds an optimal position in this tension field: Robust enough to be suitable for everyday use, yet soft enough to ensure safe handling.

We have now ordered a material which is about 10% harder than the last batch and quite frankly: We have the highest expectations for it to be the perfect fit in our particular case.

OPEN BETA: THE FIRST 100 PIECES!

Since we are already so close to our goal, there are no longer any unambiguous black-and-white decisions, it now really comes to the delicate details of daily use and whether we can meet the expectations of you guys.

We have therefore decided to produce a first test batch and send it to beta testers, who will test the prototypes in practice for around 14 days.

Based on the evaluation of the beta phase, we will then determine the next steps and hopefully start production immediately.

With a bit of luck, the project should be completed in time for the barbecue season.

The next update comes as soon as we have the new material (roughly 10-14 days delivery time), production starts and we are looking for volunteer testers. (The beta test is only open to Backers from Germany though, sorry guys!)

Es ist schon wieder etwas her, deswegen immer schön der Reihe nach:

BBQ-PAD

Wir sind inzwischen wieder mit frischem Elan an das Projekt "BBQ-Pad" gegangen, hier die Zusammenfassung der Entwicklung bis heute:

- Mit etwas Abstand betrachtet war das BBQ-Pad mit den letzten Prototypen schon zu 98% fertig und wir sind insgesamt ziemlich stolz auf das Teil.

- Lediglich die finale Schnittfestigkeit des Materials hatten wir uns etwas besser vorgestellt, bzw. sind die Schnittmarken auf dem dunkel eingefärbten Material etwas zu sichtbar. 

- Hier gilt es allerdings folgenden Spagat zu beachten: Je weicher das Material, desto empfindlicher gegenüber Schnittmarken, desto besser ist aber die Rutschhemmung. Im Umkehrschluss bedeutet dies: Je härter die Auflage, desto robuster das Pad -  allerdings nimmt die Rutschfestigkeit ab.

- Es gilt also ein Material zu finden, welches sich genau optimal in diesem Spannungsfeld positioniert: Robust genug um, um für den täglichen Einsatz geeignet zu sein, und gleichzeitig weich genug, um ein sicheres Handling zu gewährleisten.

- Wir haben nun ein Material bestellt, welches rund 10% härter als das letzte Batch ist und sich unseres Erachtens somit optimal eignen sollte.

OPEN BETA: DIE ERSTEN 100 STÜCK!

Da wir uns insgesamt schon so nah am Ziel befinden, gibt es jetzt keine eindeutigen Schwarz-Weiß Entscheidungen mehr, sondern es geht um die delikaten Details der täglichen Nutzung und darum, ob wir die Erwartungshaltung unserer Vorbesteller erfüllen können.

Wir haben uns also entschieden, einen ersten Testlauf zu produzieren und an Beta-Tester zu versenden, die die Prototypen im Praxistest rund 14 Tage testen sollen.

Basierend auf den Auswertungen der Beta-Phase werden wir dann die nächsten Schritte bestimmen und hoffentlich umgehend die Produktion starten. 

Mit etwas Glück sollte das Projekt also rechtzeitig zur Grillsaison abgeschlossen sein.

Hi Folks,

just a quick update on the status of the BBQ-Pads:

Since the search for a suitable material proves to be more difficult than expected, and since all partners involved in the manufacturing are in their Christmas peak time at the moment, we will have to push the next steps in development into the next year.

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION:

It is quite possible that the development of the pad will still take some time in the new year. nur ein kurzes Update über den Status der BBQ-Pads:

Da sich die Suche nach einem geeigneten Werkstoff schwieriger gestaltet als erwartet und alle an der Fertigung beteiligten Partner derzeit in der Weihnachtssaison sind, werden wir die nächsten Entwicklungsschritte in das nächste Jahr verschieben müssen.

ALTERNATIVE LÖSUNG:

Es ist durchaus möglich, dass die Entwicklung des Pads im neuen Jahr noch einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen wird. 

Wer nicht länger warten möchte, dem bieten wir die Möglichkeit, einen Gutschein im Wert des BBQ-Pads für einen Einkauf in unserem Webshop ANSTELLE des BBQ-Pads zu erhalten - ideal für eine zusätzliche Flasche Holzöl und den einen oder anderen Behälter, der eventuell fehlt.

Hi guys,

to follow up on the previous update: 

THE FIRST 229 ORDERS HAVE BEEN DISPATCHED. 

Shipping Tree expects to have all orders shipped within the next 6 business days.

We tried to fiddle in as many adress change requests as possible, literally until the very last minute, but we can not guarantee that we actually covered everybody. So if you havn´t received a shipping notification and a tracking number within the next 5 days, please get in touch with us and we get you sorted out.

Thats everything for now - we will post an extensive "MISSION COMPLETE" update once all orders have been dispatched.
