Hi guys,

we finally managed to resolve all issues and we got confirmation from Shipping Tree last night that they are ready to ship.

So probably by the time you guys are reading this, the first packages should already have been dispatched.

We will post another update on the progress once we have final confirmation that everything is working out. 

We are cautiously optimistic that this could well be one of the last updates covering shipping issues to the US - fingers crossed.

US BACKERS ONLY: CONTAINER ARRIVED AT WAREHOUSE - PREPARING FOR SHIPPING

Hi guys,

as we speak the container is being unloaded at our warehouse in the states.

We are currently synchronizing the database with Shipping Tree, and we aim to have dispatched all orders by the end of next week the very latest.

Please note: At this point it is no longer possible to change any shipping information!

Everybody will receive a shipping notification incl tracking number once the parcel has been dispatched.

BBQ-PAD: FIRST PROTOTYPES | US BACKERS: CONTAINER AWAITING CUSTOM CLEARANCE

Dear friends,

first off - good news: The container with all US Rewards has either already touched the american coast or is about to do so in the next few hours, now awaiting customs clearance. 

Updated Timeline:

- Transfer from port to Shipping Tree warehouse: 2 days (once we got through customs smoothly)  

- Shipping Tree to complete shipping: Within 5 business days  

- Fedex runtime 2-3 days, depending on your location  

All in we are still on schedule, with a slight delay of 1-2 days. 

Everybody will get tracking numbers once Shipping Tree dispatched the parcels, we will post an update as soon as we have a new status or we experience any issues.

BBQ-PAD: FIRST PRODUCTION PROTOTYPES

Very exciting - we have the very first "real" prototypes of the BBQ-Pad!

Overall, with just a few minor things to adjust this is a huge step forward into the right direction, so lets go into the details:

LOOK & FEEL: This first prototype already looks exactly like the design sketches and design wise there is nothing to complain about - it looks stunning, the colour and the translucency is au point and feels very very good.

MATERIAL: The material is the only real issue we see at this point, since it is slightly softer than expected resulting in noticeable cutting marks (with a very sharp knife and  with a lot of pressure). We already ordered samples of a harder material, which will be tested in the next prototyping round next week.

PRODUCTION: We need to do one more iteration round to smooth down the injection molding process, since the material has some issues to spread evenly through the mold caused by the bottleneck where we have the folding edge. Next steps: We widen the mold to make it easier for the material to spread.

FUNCTIONALITY: AS you guys can see in the video (excuse the strange music :) the liquid runs off smoothly, and without any dripping or unintentional spillage. The folding mechanism works great, and the pad sits nice and tight on the cutting board due to the fences applied underneath - although we will add a third fence in the bottom right corner just to make sure.

As mentioned above - the last critical issue we see at this point is the new material - it is alright the way it is, but it takes cutting marks too easily and we would just feel a lot better with a harder material. 

We will have the next (and hopefully last) prototyping round with the new material by the mid/end of next week. 

It feels like this could be the final iteration - exciting stuff, folks!

Liebe Freunde,

gute Nachrichten - wir haben erste "echten" Produktions-Prototypen des BBQ-Pad, und vorab: Ein riesen Schritt in die richtige Richtung.

LOOK & FEEL: Dieser Prototyp sieht schon genau so aus wie er sollte und es gibt aus einer Design-Perspektive fast nichts, worüber wir uns beschweren könnten - das Ding sieht richtig gut aus, Farbe & Transluzenz wurden exakt auf den Punkt getroffen und alles fühlt sich hochwertig und gewollt an.

MATERIAL: Das Material ist der einzige Punkt, der uns ein bißchen Sorge bereitet - es ist leider etwas weicher als erwartet, was sich in bemerkbaren Schneidespuren äußert (allerdings auch nur mit einem sehr scharfen Messer und viel Druck). Wir haben schon eine Alternative bestellt und sind zuversichtlich diesen Aspekt in den Griff zu bekommen.

PRODUKTION: Wir müssen die Spritzgussform noch ein letztes Mal in den Details überarbeiten, da das Material Schwierigkeiten hat, sich gleichmäßig in der Form auszubreiten. Schuld daran ist der Enpass rund um die Falz Richtung Auslauflippe, die sehr dünn angelegt war. Eben jene wird nun etwas geweitet, so dass mehr Material durchfließen kann.

FUNKTIONALITÄT: Wie man in dem Video sehen kann (bitte verzeiht die schräge Musik :) läuft Flüssigkeit problemlos ab, und auch vorne an der Lippe tropft alles vorschriftsmäßig in den Behälter ohne unbeabsichtigtes Schmieren und Tropfen. Der Faltmechanismus funktioniert und macht Spaß, und das Pad sitzt dank der Anshcläge satt auf dem Brett auf - trotzdem werden wir noch einen 3. Anshlag in der rechten Ecke einbringen, nur um sicher zu gehen.

Zusammenfassend: Der für uns kritischste Punkt ist zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt das richtige Material. Das jetzige ist zwar in Ordnung, aber für unseren Geschmack eben genau eine kleine Spur zu weich - wir würden uns mit einem härteren Material einfach besser fühlen.

Mitte/ Ende nächster Woche ist die Form überarbeitet und wir machen den (hoffentlich letzten) Probedurchgang, schon mit dem neuen Material.

Bei uns macht sich verhaltener Optimismus breit, dass dieses Projekt dann Ende nächster Woche endlich in die Produktion gehen könnte - sehr aufregend!

Dear friends,

some of you already asked, so here is a short update on the status of the production of the BBQ-Pad!

In the last update we showed a first injection molded prototype and first material-samples. Ever since we tried to increase the steepness of the surfaces, so that excessive juices would run off the pad easily "on their own". After long discussions and calculations, we finally scrapped this approach - in the end the risk of exploding costs for tooling and additional development was unpredictable.

So we focused entirely on our very first design - a simple pad, which could be folded to make juices flow off. The first concept was already pretty much perfect - but of course we added a few more things:

NEXT STEPS: We are currently already making the tools. Everybody involved in the project is confident that this design can be easily manufactured, yet it is possible that some details need some readjustment after we have the first prototypes in our hands (Folding hinge too small/too big and so on....)

Estimated timeframe until first preseries prototypes: 2 weeks

Many thanks for your patience so far and for being so allowing that we felt confident to go these extra miles in the development: All in all it feels great now to have finally come to a conclusion and to start the finish sprint. Although the extra miles in the product develoment where dead ends in the end, we are very happy that we went this road all the way down and to actually know that it is not feasable - otherwise we would always have considered our pad to be somewhat substandard. Terrible.

manche haben schon freundlich danach gefragt, hier nun also ein kurzes Update zum Stand der Dinge beim BBQ-Pad:

Nachdem wir mit dem letzten Update einen ersten gespritzten Prototypen und erste Materialstudien gezeigt haben, haben wir seitdem versucht, die Neigungen der Flächen weiter zu erhöhen, damit überschüssige Flüssigkeiten quasi "von selbst" ablaufen können. 

Diesen Ansatz haben wir aus verschiedenen Gründen letztendlich wieder verworfen - letztendlich war uns schlicht und ergreifend das Risiko zu groß, am Ende zwar mit optimal geneigten Flächen, aber dafür mit explodierten Herstellungskosten dazustehen.

Also haben wir uns wieder auf unsere ursprünglich Idee zurück besonnen. Am ersten Konzept war eigentlich schon alles richtig - manchmal braucht man nur etwas Zeit, um eben dies heraus zu finden.

Also haben wir den Entwurf noch mal komplett überarbeitet, allerdings mit ein paar entscheidenden Neuerungen versehen: 

 NEXT STEPS: Dieser Datensatz wird im Moment im Werkzeugbau umgesetzt und das finale Spritzguss-Werkzeug wird konstruiert. Nach einhelliger Einschätzung aller Beteiligten sollte dieses Teil grundsätzlich problemlos herstellbar sein, allerdings könnte es bei den machen Details (Knickkante zu fest/zu dünn, Abtropflippe zu dünn usw) nötig werden, noch einmal nachzujustieren, sobald wir erste Spritzversuche gemacht haben, bevor wir in die Serienproduktion starten können.

Zeitrahmen bis zum ersten Anspritzen: Ca. 2 Wochen

Vielen Dank für eure Geduld und dass Ihr uns so problemlos gestattet habt, noch mal eine Extra-Schleife in der Entwicklung gehen zu dürfen: Alles in allem fühlt es sich gut an, endlich die Entscheidung so getroffen zu haben und nun auch bei diesem Projekt den Endspurt einleiten zu können. 

Zwar war der Umweg über die erweiterte Produktentwicklung nicht zielführend, wir sind aber trotzdem sehr froh, diese Möglichkeit ausgelotet zu haben - wüssten wir jetzt nicht, dass es nicht umsetzbar ist, dann hätten wir immer das Gefühl gehabt, das unser Produkt noch besser herstellbar wäre. Eine fürchterliche Vorstellung.
