Timeline US-Shipping

Guys, 

short and crisp: We signed the contract, all looks good so far from our end.

Here is the timeline as provided by the shipping company:

- Loading of container: 13th of september 

- Transit warehouse to Antwerp port: 1-2 business days

- Transit from Antwerp to Long Beach, California: 37 days

- Transfer from port to Shipping Tree warehouse: 2 days (if we get through customs smoothly)

- Shipping Tree to complete shipping: Within 5 business days

- Fedex runtime 2-3 days, depending on your location

All together we talk about roughly 8 weeks, you can expect it late Oktober.

Still a long way to go, but at least the boards are finally moving into the right direction.

We will post short updates with every single step of the timeline completed.

BBQ-PAD FIRST PROTOTYPE

Dear friends,

as promised, here are the news on the BBQ-Pad, and we have to say: 

Very good news indeed!

In a nutshell:

POSITIVE

- Material is pretty much exactly as we hoped for - it actually exceeded all expectations.

- The channeling of liquids is working okay - we used the smallest incline here, so you still would have to lift the flaps in order to help the liquids run off.

- Material is super resistant towards cutting marks

- Material is very well workable.

CHALLENGES & NEXT STEPS

- The Pad is still slightly too slippery: Once pressure is applied it sits pretty tight, and of course a damp sponge cloth underneath already works perfectly now, but we have some ideas how to solve this problem which we would like to try first. 

- Channeling of liquids could be better - we will increase incrementally the incline of the surfaces and run further tests until we reach the incline limit where either the material or the mold reach their limits. Once we know for sure how steep we can go with the incline, we can start the final design process and tooling.

We will probably have to do 2-3 more protoypes before we can settle for the final solution.

BOTTOM LINE

This very first prototype was a major step in the right direction, and clarified for now:

- The BBQ-Pad will be made from this material 

- it will work at least as good as this prototype - probably better -

- It will look absolutely gorgeous once it has the perfect finish and the right translucent dark grey colour.

wie versprochen hier jetzt endlich Neuigkeiten zum BBQ-Pad, und wir müssen schon sagen: 

Verdammt gute Neuigkeiten.

KURZ & BÜNDIG

POSITIV:  

- Das Material is ziemlich genau so, wie wir uns das erhofft haben - genaugenommen übertrifft es die Erwartungen von allen Beteiligten.

- Die Flüssigkeitsableitung funktioniert jetzt schon ganz okay. Wir haben den ersten Prototypen mit der geringsten Neigung gemacht, und hier müsste noch durch Anheben der "Öhrchen" manuell nachgeholfen werden.

- Das Material ist extrem widerstandsfähig gegenüber Messerklingen und Schnittspuren. Bei normalem Schneiden sieht man nicht mal kleinste Schnittspuren, erst wenn man mit deutlicher Kraft schneidet enstehen feinste Kerben.

HERAUSFORDERUNGEN & NÄCHSTE SCHRITTE

- Das Pad ist noch etwas zu rutschig. Sobald Druck ausgeübt wird, sitzt es zwar schon verhältnismäßig stabil auf (ein feuchter Lappen unten drunter stabilisiert die Lage jetzt schon vollkommen), aber wir haben noch einige Ideen, wie wir das eventuell elegant in den Griff kriegen können. 

- Die Flüssigkeit-Ableitung könnte trotzdem noch besser funktionieren. Wir erhöhen mit den nächsten Prototypen inkrementell die Neigung der Flächen bis wir entweder mit der Form oder mit dem Material an Grenzen stoßen. Sobald wir wissen, wo diese Grenzen liegen, können wir uns an das finale Design und Werkzeugbau machen.

Wir rechnen damit, noch 2-3 Iterationen machen zu müssen, bevor wir loslegen können.

UNTERM STRICH

Dieser erste Prototyp ist ein riesen Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Für uns ist seit heute klar:

- Das BBQ-Pad wird aus diesem Material bestehen

- Es wird mindestens so gut funktionieren wie dieser Prototyp - sehr wahrscheinlich besser.

- Es wird absolut großartig aussehen, sobald das richtige Finish und die richtige Farbe eingebracht sind!

USA: Further delay | EUROPE: All rewards shipped

here is a quick update before the weekend:

USA-REWARDS

All rewards are packed and already on shipping pallets, but due to a dramatic lack of empty 40 foot containers on the European market we are still waiting for the booking confirmation of our container, which was due 2 weeks ago. 

Our export partner Panalpina can´t provide a clear estimate when they expect the confirmation to go through at this point (although they hope for next week), as this is a uncommon situation even for them. 

Apologies for the slow update here, we were hoping until now to have more information before we reach out to you guys - of course we will post a new update on this as soon as we have a confirmation or any news.

GERMANY, EUROPE & REST OF THE WORLD 

We are very happy to announce that all other rewards have been shipped since this Monday! 

We don´t feel like celebrating that much before also all our US-backers received their rewards as well, but - we are a little proud right know.

Bamboo arrived on time in the warehouse - they look gorgeous and 100% grossartig!

We are currently preparing the boards for shipping, everything is right on track: Shipping will start next week! Yay!

Dear friends,

roughly 4 hours after we published the last update regarding the final release of our shipping container from customs, we received another email from the local port authorities saying that our container won´t be released for another 10 days.

Yes - seriously. No joke.

..

HERE ARE THE GOOD NEWS:

This time we waited with another update until the container actually was UNLOADED into our carpenters workshop, he double checked the bamboo for any quality issues and he gave us a green light:

PRODUCTION STARTED TODAY, WE ARE BACK ON TRACK.

UPDATED TIMELINE

Production: 28.06. - 10.07.  

Delivery Germany: 12.07.  

Assembly: 12.07 - 14.07.  

Shipping: 17.07. - 21.07.

Container US leaving our warehouse: 21.07.

"I DONT WANT TO WAIT ANY LONGER!"

All other woods are on stock and can be sent out within 3 days. So if you rather want to switch wood in order to receive your order sooner, just drop us a message.

BBQ-PAD  

We finally received the results from the mold flow simulation (after weeks of waiting again, since the only person who could run those types of simulations called in sick for several weeks...we are getting used to this kind of stuff by now):  

The simulation basically says that the more complex version of the BBQ-Pad (with the honey comb structure on the bottom) has a lot of potential for failure, and since the mould is so complex and there are so many different aspects to consider, our manufacturing partner refuses to take this risk, and we are willing to follow their advice.  

But since it clearly was a better solution to the problem than the original design, we are trying now to find some sort of compromise between the 2 designs. We actually do this by making step by step prototypes with a real injection moulding tool, to gather more insights about the material quality and how it behaves if used for such a large piece.  

That´s the progress in a nutshell, we are trying hard to push the project towards a conclusion now, hoping to come up with something great!

BEHIND THE SCENES

We asked Aivar, our carpenter in Estonia, to make some videos of the production process, to give you an impression of how your BASIC was made:

Aivar is the guy in the beginning of the video, he owns the workshop together with his wife - you can spot her gluing together pieces of wood in the second half. Even after 6000 boards they produced for us we are still absolutely stoked to have them on board.

ungefähr 4 Stunden nachdem wir das letzte Update bezüglich der Freigabe unser Bambus-Containers veröffentlicht haben, hat uns die örtliche Hafenbehörde mitgeteilt, dass der Container erst in weiteren 10 Tagen abgeladen werden kann.

Ja, ernsthaft. Kein Scherz.

HIER SIND DIE GUTEN NACHRICHTEN:

Dieses Mal haben wir mit einem neuen Update gewartet, bis der Container wirklich bei unserem Schreiner ABGELADEN in der Werkstatt steht, er die Qualität geprüft und uns grünes Licht gegeben hat:

DIE PRODUKTION LÄUFT SEIT HEUTE. Wir sind endlich wieder auf dem richtigen Weg.

Aktualisierte Timeline:

Produktion: 28.06. - 10.07.

Anlieferung Deutschland: 12.07.

Konfektionierung & Vorbereitung für den Versand: 12.07 - 14.07.

Versand: 17.07. - 21.07.

"ICH MÖCHTE ABER NICHT MEHR LÄNGER WARTEN!"

Alle anderen Holzsorten sind auf Lager und können innerhalb von 3 Tagen versendet werden. Wer also lieber ein anderes Holz nehmen möchte, um die Bestellung früher zu bekommen, schreibt uns einfach eine kurze Nachricht!

BBQ-PAD  

Auch hier geht es weiter: Wir haben endlich die Resultate der Mold-Flow-Simulation erhalten (nachdem wir ewig warten mussten, weil der einzige Mitarbeiter, der diese Simulationen durchführen kann, sich für mehrere Wochen krank gemeldet hat...so langsam gewöhnt man sich an ein gewisses Maß an Absurdität :)

Die Simulation sagt im Prinzip, dass die komplexere Variante des Pads (mit der Wabenstruktur am Boden) mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht wirtschaftlich herzustellen ist und unser Produktionspartner hat es abgelehnt, das Risiko einzugehen - wir schließen uns dieser Einschätzung an. 

Die ursprüngliche Variante ist aber laut Einschätzung der Experten gut herstellbar. Und somit suchen wir nun nach einem möglichst leistungsfähigen Kompromiss, der irgendwie die Vorzüge beider Lösungen miteinander kombiniert. Und das ganze tun wir, indem wir mit einer realen Spritzguss-Form rum-experimentieren, um ein Gefühl für das Material-Verhalten zu bekommen. 

Ziemlich aufregend, wir halten euch auf dem Laufenden!

Wir haben Aivar, unseren Schreiner in Estland gefragt, ob er uns nicht ein paar Videos von der Basic-Produktion schicken kann, damit Ihr einen Eindruck davon bekommt, wie euer Basic entstanden ist:

Aivar ist der nette Herr am Anfang: Ihm gehört zusammen mit seiner Frau (zweite Hälfte des Videos, beim Holz verleimen) die Werkstatt. Er hat mittlerweile rund 6000 Bretter für uns produziert, und wir finden ihn immer noch absolute Weltklasse.
